How can we help you?

All the answers about your account, your business returns, tax calculation, payments, payment plans and refunds.

Topic 1My account

How do I create an account?

Click the profile icon at the top right, then “Create an account”. Enter your last name and first name (those of your character), a username and a password of at least 8 characters.

This is a role-play account: never use a password that you use anywhere else, and do not enter any real information.

I forgot my password. What should I do?

There is no automatic recovery by email: no email address is requested when you sign up. Contact an IRS agent: they reset your password and give you an activation code (single use, valid for 48 hours), which you use to choose your new password yourself. Your open sessions are closed.

How can I see the password I am typing?

In the sign-in window, click the eye to the right of the “Password” field to show it in plain text, then click it again to hide it.

I was given an activation code. How do I use it?

You receive an activation code when the IRS creates your account or resets your password. Click the profile icon, type your username and click “Sign in”, leaving the password empty: the site then asks you to enter your activation code and choose your password. The code can only be used once and expires after 48 hours.

How long do I stay signed in?

30 days on the same browser. You can sign out at any time from the profile icon menu.

Topic 2Returns

Who has to file?

Only businesses file returns. Individuals have no return to file.

When do I have to file?

Every week. The tax week runs from Monday 00:00 to Sunday 23:59 (art. 4-2.2). Accounts must be closed by Sunday at 23:30 at the latest (art. 4-1.4); tax is assessed on Monday and must be paid before the following Thursday at 20:00 (art. 4-2.9).

On the site, you can file for the current week, for next week in advance, or for one of the three previous weeks to catch up on a late return. A late or missing return may lead to an administrative fine, a formal notice, then heavier penalties (art. 4-2.4).

What do I need to include in the return?

The business name, its legal form (sole proprietorship, LLC or Corporation), the city of its head office, its business sector and the week concerned; then revenue, expenses, the number of employees and the payroll paid; and finally the link to your accounts. The tax is calculated automatically (art. 4-2.3). You can add a comment to explain an exceptional expense.

Which accounts link should I provide?

The link to the document where the IRS can view the details of your income, expenses, wages and profits (spreadsheet, shared folder…), with read access. The Code requires honest accounts and the keeping of supporting documents (art. 4-1.1 and 4-1.2).

Does my new business have to pay tax?

Not during the first two weeks after it opens, is taken over or gets a new owner (art. 4-2.8). You must still file every week and tick the “Two-week exemption” box: no tax is then calculated, and the IRS checks the exemption. It may be withdrawn in case of fraud or fictitious activity.

I made a mistake in a return I have already sent.

A filed return cannot be changed online. Let an IRS agent know, giving the return reference (such as DEC-202640-00001). If you paid too much, you can then request a refund.

Where can I find my returns?

At the bottom of the File a return page, under “My returns”, or from the profile icon menu. You can see the status of each one (Filed, Approved, Paid, Rejected) and any note from the IRS.

Topic 3Tax calculation

How is the tax calculated?

The tax is calculated on revenue, minus justified operating costs: supplies, raw materials, equipment, service vehicles, administrative costs, employment contracts and wages… (art. 4-2.7). Artificial contracts, fictitious transactions and owner dividends are not deductible.

This profit is then multiplied by your sector's rate. The File a return page shows the applicable rate as soon as you choose the sector, and calculates the tax as you type.

What are the rates by sector?

The Code sets weekly rates by sector (art. 4-2.10):

  • 70%: Ammu-Nation, real estate agencies
  • 50%: car dealerships
  • 35%: vineyard, sawmill, Redwood Tobacco, private security agencies
  • 30%: mechanics and towing
  • 15%: restaurants and bars, press
  • 10%: transport companies

Other sectors pay the general rate set by the IRS, shown on the File a return page. Rates may be changed by decree.

My business made a loss: do I have to pay?

No: the tax is based on profit. If revenue does not cover the deductible costs, no tax is due for the week.

Can the rate change?

Yes, by government decree or regulation. Each return keeps the rate in force when it was filed: a later change does not affect it.

Topic 4Payments and late payments

When do I have to pay?

Tax is assessed every Monday (art. 4-2.6); it must be paid before the following Thursday at 20:00 (art. 4-2.9). If you have been granted a payment plan, each installment is due in the week set out in the plan.

How do I pay?

Payment is made to an IRS agent, in the game. Once the payment is received, the agent records it: your return then shows as “Paid” under “My returns”.

What happens if I pay late?

If the tax is not paid on time, the IRS may apply a surcharge, an administrative penalty, a suspension, a temporary closure or a closer audit (art. 4-2.9). Except in an emergency or obvious fraud, the IRS first tries to contact the business.

Having difficulties? Request a payment plan before the deadline instead.

Topic 5Payment plans

What is a payment plan?

The option to pay the tax on a return in several weekly installments (from 2 to 6), rather than all at once.

How do I apply?

On the Request a payment plan page: choose the return concerned and the number of installments, and explain the business's situation. An agent reviews the request and answers you on the portal.

Why is my return not in the list?

Only returns with tax to pay, not yet paid or rejected, and with no request already in progress, can be covered by a payment plan.

Where can I see the IRS answer?

Under “My requests”, at the bottom of the Request a payment plan page. If the request is accepted, the installment schedule is shown there week by week.

Topic 6Refunds

When can I get a refund?

Overpayment, error in the return, duplicate payment, cancelled activity or closure of the business, or any other justified reason.

How do I make a request?

On the Refunds page: choose the return, the amount and the reason, then explain your request. A link to a supporting document (corrected accounts, receipt…) helps the agent review it.

How much can I ask for?

At most what you paid on this return, minus refunds already requested or granted. The IRS may grant all or part of the amount requested.

Why can't I request anything?

A refund is only possible if the IRS has recorded at least one payment on the return concerned.

Topic 7Rules to know

Where can I find all the rules for businesses?

In the Business Code: setting up businesses and their legal forms, employment contracts and wages, associations, accounting and tax, administrative inspection, anti-competitive practices and penalties.

What are a business's main obligations?

Being declared and registered before operating (art. 0-3), having a head office (art. 1-1.2), drawing up a written contract for each employee (art. 2-1.1), keeping honest accounts closed every Sunday (art. 4-1.1 and 4-1.4), justifying every financial transaction (art. 4-1.5), and filing and paying tax every week.

Are there caps on pay?

Yes, depending on the sector: for example, at most 35% of sales for owners and managers and 30% for other employees in services, or 25% and 20% in sensitive sectors (firearms, car dealerships, real estate) (art. 2-4.5 and following). The owner may also choose a dividend, limited to 15% of after-tax profit and not deductible (art. 2-4.9).

Can the IRS audit my business?

Yes. The IRS is the competent authority for taxation, accounting audits and tax checks (art. 4-2.5). Supporting documents must be presented during an audit (art. 4-1.2), and administrative inspection is governed by chapter 5.

Topic 8Contact the IRS

Didn't find your answer? Speak to an IRS agent in the game, at the Los Santos offices or at the Sandy Shores and Paleto Bay local offices.

Remember to give the reference of your return (such as DEC-202640-00001): it lets us find your file immediately.
